Aliya and Shaendl
Meet
Citrus & Salt, is a dynamic cooking studio owned by sisters Aliya and Shaendl. Originally from Berkeley, California, Aliya started the business in 2016 with a small kitchen and a big vision. What began as a passion project in her tiny Tel Aviv apartment has since blossomed into a thriving studio and community hub for immigrants, offering a place to gather, learn, and connect through the art of cooking.
The sisters’ journey took an unexpected turn when Citizen’s Kitchen, their war kitchen initiative, was born. Since its inception, it has served over 100,000 meals to soldiers, hostage families, reserve duty families, and those recovering from injury.
“I’ve had to harness my resilience to lead over 3,000 volunteers since October 7, alongside my sister,” Aliya shared. “We’ve focused on doing whatever is necessary to help give comfort through food while keeping the business afloat.”
Despite the challenges, the sisters remain committed to their mission, and their Israeli cooking course, filmed just before the war, is a testament to their love for the flavors, history, and spirit of Israeli cuisine. It’s an opportunity for people around the world to connect to Israel and support the studio during these difficult times.
Citrus & Salt is a space where cooking, community, and resilience come together.
"Food is more than just sustenance — it’s about bringing people together, whether in the kitchen or through the impact of shared meals during challenging times"
